Subject: NPA virtual Garden Tour Talk

My name is Alison Johnson and I am coPresident of Northwest Perennial Alliance.  I am looking to promote NPA with a  presentation on ‘Virtual Tours of NPA Gardens 2020” to fellow garden groups via Zoom.

I am happy to present this talk free, to  any of your garden group as its  membership renewal time fro NPA  and we are hoping to attract new members.  I know you can appreciate that  with so many of the usual promotional  avenues closed to us we are hoping to get the word out about our non-profit group to other garden  groups.

The talk  is  a PowerPoint and video clips of the gardens that were open to NPA members this year, because of the pandemic we videoed and made then made available via Vimeo to our members.

I then complied a few favorite videos  added some plant picks  and recommendations from each garden and created an entertaining  talk that I think your members will really enjoy and then want to join NPA!

(I have given this talk to 2 garden clubs around Seattle)
Please feel free to forward this, thank you.
The best way to can contact me is email ajohnson.npa@gmail.com

Best Wishes
Alison Johnson

 ELWD ECHO EXTRA – June 7, 2020

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Club Members

East Lake Washington District of Garden Clubs has been unable to meet for a long time now and your Director Team hopes that you and your family are well.  Some of the things our clubs have done during this time are in this Echo Extra.  One thing many members are doing is sharing photos of their garden.  We can take virtual tours or space visitors ten minutes apart or whatever works. With the mostly nice weather, meeting outside can be done with safe spacing of people. And of course virtual meetings via Zoom or whatever means you share, can be effective and grow your groups feeling of being connected.

Even though we cannot meet in person, there are other ways to maintain contact. Friendship is the cornerstone of our clubs as is sharing knowledge and plants. During this Pandemic Pause, we are learning how to cope and support each other. Lets share ideas that work.

Our ELWD website is filled with things to explore and anchor you during this difficult time. National Garden Clubs postponed the National Convention but NGC is having a Virtual Flower Show in mid June. Pictures will be posted on the NGC website. The rules for the NGC show are posted on the ELWD website.

The Pacific Region Convention has been postponed to August 2021 at the Oregon Garden. The WSFGC Convention was moved from June to late September assuming gatherings are allowed by then. It will be held in Ellensburg WA. For more information on these events, see our ELWD website or call Lana at 425-747-5742.

The state WSFGC magazine and the National magazine are going to be distributed via email from now on. The region has been distributing its WACONIAH magazine electronically for several years now.

I have a perennial garden. If you want free plants, come dig. I always have plants I can share. I can be reached at 425-7475742 and I live in Bellevue at 1414 179th Ave. NE, Bellevue 98008 near Crossroads.

Wishing you all the best on behalf of the ELWD Director Team:  Marti Bolcer (Terra Tillers), Elaine Fowler (West Sammamish) and Lana Finegold (Sherwood Forest).

If you need help, do let us know.

Vision of Beauty Calendars

ACTION NEEDED by June 21  (Club Presidents – Please note ordering change from what you were sent earlier)

Vision of Beauty Calendars: It’s time again to order the National Garden Club Vision of Beauty Calendars; they are spiral bound 6″ x 8 1/2″ desk calendars.  The cost is $5  and in an age of electronic calendars, you’ll still find these are useful for floral design inspiration or just to enjoy the talents of those who submitted things. Debbie Spiller, former Hilltoppers Garden Club member, now living in Olympia has her design on the cover.  VOB has beautiful photos and identified plant materials.   Many members save their collection of these calendars.

Note from June Ann Hassebroek re Vision of Beauty Calendars:  (in case you don’t know June Ann, she is our lead cheerleader for all things garden club)

These lovely calendars make great Public Relations items.  The story inside the cover about the purpose of our organization, the lovely emotion inducing designs and gardens should inspire anyone to want to learn what our organization shares. Clubs could consider buying to give to the people that come to give club programs.  Maybe give them to leaders in other garden or design or environmental groups.  This calendar is an amazing buy and a great keepsake, I probably have about 30 I’ve saved over the years.

To order a calendar, please email Joyce Voldal, javoldal@hotmail.com  (if you receive the ECHO EXTRA directly from Joyce all you have to do is “reply” with how many you would like.  You don’t have to prepay, money will be collected prior to distribution which usually happens after the Fall State Board Meeting. Please respond by June 21.

CLUB NEWS

Woodinville Garden Club – Online Plant Sale Success   (report by Hazel Beatty)

The Woodinville Garden Club recently presented Hopelink a check for $ 16,244.00, made possible by overwhelming public support for their recent online plant sale The club donated 100% of the revenue from the sale to Hopelink’s Greatest Need Fund Covid-19. The plants that were nurtured from seedings and starts by club members in early spring were nearly all sold out in less than a day. Then, the plants were personally delivered to local Woodinville zip codes or safely picked up “curbside” by the shoppers. Leftover tomato seedlings were shared with the Woodinville Food Bank, the Maltby Food Bank and the Bothell Senior Center Food Pantry.

The Woodinville Garden Club would like to express heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful supporters without whom our sale and donation would not have been possible. The location where the planting and growing takes place is thanks to the overwhelming generosity of a Woodinville family who for many years have welcomed the garden club to use their beautiful greenhouse. This year, order fulfillment for over 170 plant orders took place at the greenhouse as well. Many thanks also to The Wooden Cross Church in Woodinville who graciously approved curbside pickup to take place in their parking lot.

A sincere and appreciative thank you goes to all who shopped the online sale that resulted in the club’s donation to Hopelink’s Greatest Need Fund Covid-19. The plants are now growing in gardens in Woodinville, Bothell, Renton, Everett, Bellevue, Monroe and Seattle. For the past 35 years, the Woodinville Garden Club has made contributions to our community and globally because of this remarkable support. We look forward to seeing you next year when the plant sale will return to beautiful Chateau Ste. Michele in May and the Tour of Gardens in July.

Convention Planning in May

Convention Planning – What a Ride

By Diane Franchini, 2020 Convention Chairman

I’ve never really been a fan of roller coasters. Their basic foundation structures look a bit shaky to me and I’ve never been fond of gaining incredible high’s just to be plunged into devastating low’s. I try to function on a more even keel. That’s just who I am.

However, we are finding ourselves in an unusual place right now. We’re facing how to return to “a new normal” that may still require maintain social distancing, wearing masks in public, and lots of different ways to live our life to its fullest. The bottom line is safety and exercising caution in every aspect of our lives.

After 2 months of Covid-19 shutdowns, we find ourselves at the top of that steep roller coaster climb ready to take that “stomach-in-my-throat” plunge – right at that point where we collectively hold our breath in uncertain anticipation of what’s to come next.

Charting New Territory for a Convention

Being an obsessive planner and organizer (as well as an unrelenting optimist) I’m pleased to say that the 2020 WSFGC Convention, “Welcome to the ‘Burg Where East Meets West” has been rescheduled so that we can still meet together and catch up with garden club friends from across the state. From the very beginning this has been an “unconventional convention” and it will continue to be molded into a form that will allow us to move forward. It’s bound to look and feel a little different than what we’ve experienced in the past, but sometimes different can be better for everyone.

The New Details

o The dates have been changed with Hotel Windrow to Tuesday, September 29th through Thursday, October 1, 2020. Those who made reservation for the June convention have been contacted and have rebooked for September. Hotel booking deadline is now August 28th.

o The “old” registration form can still be used but a rescheduled form is now available from Diane Franchini at franchinisd@gmail.com, on the WSFGC website, or in this newsletter. Deadline is now September 15th to register.

o We’ve added a ½ day (September 29th) for the Special Breakout meetings beginning at 1:00 pm, but we did not change the registration package cost or number of meals included. Dinner on the 29th will be “Explore Ellensburg Eateries” allowing for a variety of options on your own or in small groups.

o The Pre-Convention Board Meeting will be held the morning of the 30th but will also include an adaptation of the Fall and Winter Board Meetings. Strange you might say but think of this as a 3 for 1 deal!! Three board meetings + one hotel reservation and one registration = a big savings for our members.

o We may (or may not) be required to add face masks to our garden club attire (think of a glitzy version for the Gala Night Dinner) but even if we are passed that requirement by then we have decided to add a face mask fashion show to one of our lunches. So now’s the time to get crafting or sewing a special garden related face mask and join in our First-ever Face Mask Fashion Show!

o At this time the Tours are all the same as before. We’ve been reaching out to the businesses involved and some are difficult to reach right now but we are looking forward to showing you what Ellensburg has to offer.

o As of right now, the Dedications for a Blue Star Marker in Ellensburg and a Gold Star Marker in Selah have not been rescheduled but we’ll let you know when we are able to hold those prestigious ceremonies.

I think that should provide everyone with enough information and hopefully a reason or two to look forward to the newly revamped and rescheduled 2020 Convention – “Welcome to the ‘Burg Where East meets West.”

Today, I’m trying to find a balance between panic and embracing the chance to slow my pace. I am trying to maintain a little bit of my normal routine – cup of tea in the morning, get dressed, do my hair and makeup (even if I’m just going out in my yard), eat a good breakfast. And I definitely am looking forward to September 29th when we can greet one another and share our stories like never before.

Enter A Virtual Flower Show July 2020

National Garden Clubs, Inc. presents A Virtual Flower Show
Gay Austin, PresidentNational Garden Clubs, Inc.

“Originally the Perfect Vision 2020 Petite Horticulture Specialty Flower Show was created for our members to exhibit at NGC’s Annual Convention in Milwaukee May 2020. Due to the cancellation of this annual event, this well-planned flower show also had to also be cancelled. Rather than just walk away entirely from this event, we decided to attempt a virtual Flower Show. With some modifications of the original flower show schedule, this “Virtual Flower Show” was created.” National Garden Club

Green Matters: Wild Olympics Legislation Passes U.S. House of Representatives!

Wild Olympics Legislation Passes
U.S. House of Representatives!
Lana, We are excited to share with you that on Wednesday, February 12, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Wild Olympics Wilderness & Wild and Scenic Rivers Act! Thank you to Representative Derek Kilmer (WA06) who introduced the legislation in the House and Senator Patty Murray who is the sponsor in the Senate. This is a big victory for salmon recovery, growing local jobs and the economy, and safeguarding clean water. This is an important milestone that we could not have reached without your support. The bill protects the first new Wilderness designations (more than 126,000 acres) in the Olympic National Forest in nearly 30 years and the first-ever Wild and Scenic River designations (for 19 rivers and their tributaries constituting more than 460 miles of river) on the Olympic Peninsula. The legislation provides permanent safeguards for the Peninsula’s most priceless natural treasures; our towering ancient forests, free-flowing rivers, critical fish and wildlife habitat, and our clean water. To protect these critical resources for all, we need you on our team. As a founding member of the Wild Olympics Campaign, Washington Wild and local conservation groups on the Olympic Peninsula have been working with neighbors in every single community on the Peninsula to build support from diverse local voices, listen to concerns, and get feedback to shape the proposal. More than 12,000 Peninsula residents have written letters or signed our petition, and more than 800 Peninsula & Hood Canal area-businesses, farms, faith leaders, sportsmen groups, elected officials, conservation, outdoor recreation, and civic groups have endorsed Wild Olympics.

What happens now? The Wild Olympics Wilderness & Wild and Scenic Rivers Act will move to the U.S. Senate and hopefully pass into law. The work to pass this important legislation is not done, but we have come a long way.  Join us as we continue to advocate for wild lands and waters on the Olympic Peninsula and across Washington State.
